This October, Theatre Oxford will present It’s My Party!, written by Ann Timmons, with the League of Women Voters Oxford/North Mississippi. The League of Women Voters and Theatre Oxford will produce the show October 22–24 as part of a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.
The play, originally developed in conjunction with Pipeline Playwrights, examines what happens when two different factions ignite political change using wildly different tactics. It’s My Party! explores the generational split that threatened the suffragists’ march toward the 19th Amendment. Competing strategies, daring stunts, and bitter rivalries abound, along with the hope and persistence it takes to get something done in Washington. It features local actors in roles of famous suffragists Alice Paul, Carrie Chapman Catt, and Mississippi’s own Ida B. Wells-Barnett.
Theatre Oxford is so grateful to have the support of the League of Women Voters. Ruth O’Dell, the Chairman of the Centennial Committee, said, “We are thrilled to be a partner with Theater Oxford to celebrate the ratification of the 19th Amendment. The play will feature some of the greatest characters in the women’s suffrage movement. Go back in time with Theater Oxford and relive this exciting moment in American history!”
